What is RSS and do you need to know?

I went to a training class today in St. George, Utah, put on by ERA Utah Brokers. It was informative and fun. One thing mentioned several times was NOT re-inventing the wheel. Sticking with that line of thought, here we go…….

As  readership of the Lake Powell Real Estate Blog is increasing I’ve had several questions asked about the Subscribe button in the left column. What is it? If I click it, what am I subscribing to?

A couple of months ago I ran across a great post at ProBlogger about what RSS is. Rather than re-inventing the wheel - check out the ProBlogger post on RSS.

In his post Darren links to the Oprah ah-ha moment for understanding RSS - How to Explain RSS the Oprah Way

Feedburner is the service I am currently using to aid in subscribing to this blog. Clicking on the subscribe button takes you to a page where you can subscribe using a number of different “readers’ (see above problogger post) or subscribe by email in a more newsletter format. I have all of my favorite blogs in Google Reader making for a enjoyable experience to follow all of my favorites in one place.

What i’ve found is subscribing means I have less to remember (gee- where was the blog Sandy whats-her-name writes) and more time to enjoy the organized information coming across my Google reader. In the age of information, and many times too much information, RSS can help make sense of it all.

      Great tips Heather!

I only started using RSS a few months ago and it has been a life saver! No more cluttering up my toolbar with tons & tons of bookmarks & instant updates of new content on the sites that I care about.

I am still getting the hang of it. As with all things new, it takes a bit. I do love Google Reader and use it every day. Pretty cool considering several months ago I did not know what it was, or why I would ever need it!
