First All Women Council in U.S.

This would even be news today, 100 years later, but in 1912 it was stunning. No where had this happened in the country and it was not until 1920 with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution stating “The right of citizens of the U.S. to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the U.S. or by any state on account of sex.” that Women’s Suffrage had truly come to pass.

Utah has a long standing place in the Woman’s Suffrage movement having granted women the right to vote in 1870 thus enfranchising over 17,000 women, the largest voting female population in the world and only second behind the state of Wyoming.

Emmeline B. Wells became the most powerful voice in the suffrage movement nationwide and stated woman should be “recognized as a responsible being,” with a right to choose her own destiny. In 1887 the federal government passed the Edmunds-Tucker Bill, disfranchising all Utah women. In 1896 women again were granted the ‘right’ to vote after Utah officially became the 45th state.

The Kanab City Council accomplished many things during their term including laying out the cemetery, getting dikes and bridges built to protect Kanab from flood waters, and adopting animal control ordinances. It is an interesting testament that the current Mayor of Kanab, UT, is also a woman ~ Nina Laycook.

Two new predatory dinosaur species were named from Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in 2011, the giant Teratophoneus curriei and the diminuitive Talso sampsoni. These two new animals have no direct ties to any species known from north of Utah, and are instead related to forms found in New Mexico. Come find out how this single fact reshapes our view of North America as it was 75 million years ago!

Dr. Alan Titus is the paleontologist at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. He studied at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (BS), University of Arkansas (MSc), and Washington State University (PhD), and has held several teaching positions at colleges and universities in the West. Born in Toledo, Ohio, and raised in Las Vegas, Alan has been interested in paleontology since childhood. As a young boy, he spent countless hours outside the city of Las Vegas exploring fossils in the ancient rocks. It is said that Dr. Titus can’t walk more than 20 feet in his beloved Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument without making a fossil find – probably exaggerated, but only slightly.

Admission is free. The Glen Canyon Lecture Series is sponsored by Glen Canyon Natural History Association, Powell Museum, and Page Public Library and is provided as a service to the community and the visitors to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Rainbow Bridge National Monument, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, and Glen Canyon Dam/Lake Powell.

The Holiday Home Tour was yesterday and this week begins the Hometown Holiday Outdoor Decorating Contest. Deadline for the application to have your home in the competition is December 12, 2011 at 5:00 at the Page Lake Powell Chamber Office. All local residents of Page, Greenehaven, Big Water and LeeChee are invited to participate and winners will be announced on Dec 17th.

Schedule of Events on December 17, 2011

December 17th is the annual Parade of Lights in Page with many surrounding events leading up to the parade.

COLORADO RIVER DISCOVERY is hosting Santa Clause from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with refreshments, caroling and story time.

Later in the day, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Santa will fly into the PAGE AIRPORT for his pre-Christmas Layover. There will be refreshments, music, a story, a raffle and an auction with the party starting at 2 p.m.

Beginning at 6 p.m. is the annual PARADE OF LIGHTS on Lake Powell Blvd. Cars, trucks, boats, RV’s and in general, moving vehicles, are encouraged to participate. Line up at Page City Park at 5 p.m.

Dan and Doris Boston are the grand marshals for the parade and Santa will be riding along,

To wind up the busy day for Santa he will be at the PAGE CITY PARK after the parade. The winners of the Outdoor Decorating Contest will also be announced after the parade.

Big Water, UT, is a lovely, small town on the south shores of Lake Powell, where I have chosen to raise my family. Now they are mostly grown and I have grandchildren here as well, and plan on, well, staying here.

With a background in technology, real estate, and tourism as well as my love for our area, I know I have much to bring to the table. For the better part of 15 years I’ve been active in the state GOP and have developed great friendships with the Mayor of Kanab and several Kane County elected officials which should smoothly transition into great working relationships.

This endeavor has taught me a lot and I’ve made some great new friends on the path. I am excited for the future and look forward to serving the community I love and call home.
